Martha B. Day School Where All Children Can and Do Learn |
|
September 5, 2008
Dear Parents, Our school wide theme of “Reading Rocks”, which highlights an author a month, provides a focus for our students to really get to know some of the finest writers and illustrators of children’s literature. It also reflects our deep commitment to promoting literacy in our youngest learners. Balanced Literacy-also known as reading and writing workshop, is a progressive and data-based approach to teaching these basic skills. It asserts that all children can learn to read and write and provides for students to work at a level that is not frustrating for them. Students have the opportunity to engage in real life reading and writing experiences. These experiences include reading aloud to children, shared reading, guided reading and independent reading. Writing activities follow a similar pattern with shared writing, (whole class), interactive writing, writer’s workshop (small groups or individual, and independent writing. Children are taught about letters, sounds, words, and how they work. In the early grades the content areas of science, social studies, health, music, art, and technology are often integrated with thematic units to enhance the learning experience. We are grateful to you, our parents who through the P.T.A., bring special cultural experiences to our students that enrich the curriculum. These plays and musicals are always educational and their interactive nature delights our young children. I look forward to meeting all of you at our Back to School Night which is scheduled for Tuesday, September 23, 2008. Thank you for sharing your most precious possession with us each day. It is my pleasure to be a part of their early education. I invite you to stop in any time as my door is always open.
Sincerely,
